Acceptable Use Policy

Our policy helps ensure fast, reliable, and fair service for every customer.

186Fiber may update this Acceptable Use Policy at any time. Our mission is to support education, recreation, government, and economic growth in Northwest Lower Michigan with reliable fiber internet. To protect our network and ensure the best experience for all, we ask customers to follow these guidelines.

By using our service, you agree to this policy. Violations may lead to suspension or termination (no refunds) and charges for repairs, labor, or excessive usage.

General Guidelines

Service is for lawful use only. Prohibited activities include:

  • Violating copyright, trademark, or intellectual property laws.
  • Sending spam or unsolicited email.
  • Launching attacks, distributing malware, or unauthorized access.
  • Hosting or transmitting illegal content.
  • Reselling or sharing service without written permission.

Network Abuse & Security

Respect others' privacy and security:

  • No unauthorized access to systems or accounts.
  • No intentional disruptions (e.g., flooding or excessive usage affecting others).
  • Secure your equipment (strong Wi-Fi passwords recommended).

We may monitor traffic for security and act on abuse.

Speeds & Performance

Advertised speeds are "up to" maximums under ideal conditions. Actual speeds vary based on factors like device capabilities, local network setup, congestion, or Wi-Fi interference. We cannot guarantee speeds on Wi-Fi-connected devices or troubleshoot customer computer/network issues. If needed, we can test with our equipment — service calls are $90/hour if no fault is found on our side.

Equipment & Router Policies

  • Rented routers are an additional monthly fee and not included in base service. They allow remote diagnostics of local network issues.
  • The ONU and exterior enclosure remain 186Fiber property. Upon cancellation, return them in good condition within 30 days or a $250 replacement fee applies.

Multiple Residences & Shared Connections

Service is for one primary residence. Separate dwelling units (even on the same property) occupied by non-immediate family members require individual subscriptions. Outbuildings (garages, pole barns) used by the same immediate family may share the connection.

Post-Installation Responsibility

Before any digging or ground disturbance after installation, call Miss Dig (811) and notify 186Fiber. Damage to buried lines (by you or contractors) is your responsibility — service calls are $90/hour if not our fault, plus repair/replacement costs.

Billing & Conditions

  • Fees paid in advance; first month non-refundable.
  • Accurate billing info required.
  • While we aim for 99.9%+ uptime, "virtually unlimited" access does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Outages may occur due to maintenance, weather, or factors beyond our control.
  • Continued use after changes means acceptance.
  • Returned checks: $20 fee; refunds: 12% fee.
  • No pro-rated monthly fees.

Enforcement & Reporting

Violations may result in immediate action. Report abuse to support@186fiber.net. We cooperate with law enforcement.
